Jahdan Blakkamoore – Global Warning! Podcast

Word on the streets (and by streets I really mean blogs) is that Jahdan Blakkamoore is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album, Babylon Nightmare. No release date has been announced yet, but while we anxiously await the return of our favorite genrebending, Guyanese-Brooklynite singjay we have the Global Warning! podcast/mixtape to hold us down.
This mix was put together by Digital Ancient for Lustre Kings, the record label behind Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, and now Jahdan, as a little preview of what’s to come on the LP. After only a couple of rotations, I’m ready to for some full-length tracks – especially the Eek-A-Mouse sampling, “Down in the Ghetto.”
Peep the tracklist and a little BTS video after the jump. Happy Solstice, suckas!

Buck 65- The Dirtbike Project
For many folks Buck 65 might be an acquired taste, which is cool because listening to Buck a.k.a. Rich Terfy, is sometimes like talking to a whiskey-breathed oracle. Still the gruffy voiced hip hop troubadour has stayed prolific and continually forays into collaborations with outstanding artists in crazy different genres, not to mention holding down a dope radio show, Radio 2 Drive on CBC.
Enter the Dirtbike project, Buck calls it a woodshed demo – 3 albums worth of material in 3 months! and free for people? holla! download the ‘Dirtbike’ project via e-mail.

BLK JKS: propelling afro futurism
Santa came through today fresh from South Africa. Over some milk and cookies, he put me on this dope band he has on repeat in the sleigh: the originally Johannesburg based BLK JKS . Snooping around the Secretly Canadian website- the label that also signed the currently hot Yeasayer, I came across this cut Molalatladi (meaning, Rainbow). The song elucidates what BLK JKS band bio describes as an “entangling of township blues, fringe jazz and renegade dub — into the DNA of prog”. I get excited thinking about the kind of live show these guys must throw down (hint hint Seattle promoters) . Cop their album After Robots at Secretly Canadian, and be easy with that egg-nog….
Here is the recently released video for Molalatladi
Soulforce – Essential Mix Vol. 1
I knew as soon as I heard David Rodigan’s voice that this mixtape was going to be good. He would never vouch for any sound system that’s less than the best, right? Exactly. This is musical fire.
Soulforce is from Krefeld, Germany. They are bad (as in good), and they’ve been hard at work since 2005. This mix, which was first heard on the Köln radio station WDR / Funkaus Europa, is a collection of their favorite songs from the last four years. If you’re like me, by the time you hear the second track you’ll be scanning the internet for full versions of all these songs.

El Commandante Sound – Mixtape Guerilla Vol. 11
Have you been longing for a new lovers rock/roots reggae mixtape to get you through your days? Wait no longer, my friends. I have found the cure for your jones. Courtesy of Berlin’s own El Commandante Sound, I present to you Mixtape Guerilla Vol. 11. Download here, or stream below.
Mungo’s HiFi – Sound System Champions
Holy shit! I just found the nastiest sound system coming outta… wait for it… really, you’re not gonna believe where they’re from…… Scotland! Yup.

This Glasgow sound system is on indie label Scotch Bonnet Records, and so are most of the other artists featured on this cd. This is a solid album through and through. I have a feeling there’s gonna be a lot more good music coming from this label and this sound system in the future.
On sort of a side note, this whole post reminds me of that Starburst commercial with the Korean-Scottish dad and son talking about how they are “contradictions,” because they are Korean and Scottish. That commercial is whack and the people that made it are ignorant. Mungo’s is like the antithesis to the whackness that is that commercial (minus the Korean and plus the Jamaican). Know what I’m sayin?
Tarrus Riley – Contagious (2009)
If you don’t already know about Tarrus Riley, you’re sleeping. He is one of my favorite artists doing the roots/lovers rock thing right now. In 2008, he received the Best Male Vocalist award at the International Reggae and World Music Awards. He hails from Miramar, Florida (Broward County stand up!), and he is the son of reggae icon Jimmy Riley. This is his third full-length album, and it stands apart from most new reggae albums as it contains mostly previously unreleased material. This is rare in reggae, you see. Usually, new artist’s albums are just a compilation of singles released throughout the previous year. Tarrus breaks the mold, and comes out winning. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to put a few hit singles (start a new, good girl gone bad) and a MJ cover (human nature) on your album too.
