Jahdan Blakkamoore – Global Warning! Podcast

Word on the streets (and by streets I really mean blogs) is that Jahdan Blakkamoore is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album, Babylon Nightmare.  No release date has been announced yet, but while we anxiously await the return of our favorite genrebending, Guyanese-Brooklynite singjay we have the Global Warning! podcast/mixtape to hold us down.

This mix was put together by Digital Ancient for Lustre Kings, the record label behind Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, and now Jahdan, as a little preview of what’s to come on the LP.  After only a couple of rotations, I’m ready to for some full-length tracks – especially the Eek-A-Mouse sampling, “Down in the Ghetto.”

Shabba!

I finally got around to reading that Shabba Ranks article in the latest Fader (probably because it’s free online now), and I gotta say it was a pretty good read.  I mean, I knew Shabba was the man back in the day and that he was hella influential, but dang!  This man is a living legend.  The Fader and Eddie “Stats” Houghton have done Shabba justice.  Real Patois.

South Rakkas Crew – The Stimulus Package

Toronto natives and Orlando residents Dow Jones and Alex G, aka the South Rakkas Crew, bring that next level reggae sound like no one else can on their latest all-purpose party mixtape album, The Stimulus Package (right click, save as), featuring vocals from Deerhoof, Bounty Killa, Serocee, Killa Queenz, Lady Chann, Rage, Capleton, Grafton Primary, MC GI, Lei Di Dai, Mr Agony, Mr Easy and Lexie Lee.  This mixtape is blazing hot and fresh off the presses, so I don’t have a tracklist for you yet.

That guy DV One. He’s giving 2010 no rest. On this, the first day of the new year, DV dropped an epic roots reggae mix, replete (yes, replete) with gone fire from the likes of U Roy, the Congos, Linton Kwesi Johnson and many many more.

I’ve been trying really hard not to post whole albums, because… well… it’s not nice.  But I couldn’t resist - I just had to post this.  I mean, c’mon, it’s a reggae Christmas box set!  How could I not?  Please don’t hate me, internet ethicists and regulators out there!

Yes, this has been around for a while.  But do you have it?  I didn’t think so.  Download and bump this at your family Christmas party tonight or tomorrow, and, if you’re Eastern Orthodox, on January 7th. 

Soulforce – Essential Mix Vol. 1

I knew as soon as I heard David Rodigan’s voice that this mixtape was going to be good.  He would never vouch for any sound system that’s less than the best, right?  Exactly.  This is musical fire.

Soulforce is from Krefeld, Germany.  They are bad (as in good), and they’ve been hard at work since 2005.  This mix, which was first heard on the Köln radio station WDR / Funkaus Europa, is a collection of their favorite songs from the last four years.  If you’re like me, by the time you hear the second track you’ll be scanning the internet for full versions of all these songs.

Sexual Healing X Waiting in Vain

Apparently this mash up came out last December on an album called Best of Bangers R Mashed , released by the UK label (surprise) Bangers R Mashed.  I just heard this song the other day for the first time (call me late to the party), and  I can’t stop listening to it and staring at my itunes like I’m crazy.   A Marvin Gaye classic over  one of my favorite [Bob Marley and the] Wailers riddims, really?  You know you have to listen to this.  It might sound cheesy in writing, and maybe it is, but I’m feeling this right now.  It’s kinda like trying two of your favorite foods together for the first time and realizing you’ve been missing something all along.  I don’t know what foods those are, but you get the metaphor.

Jovi Rockwell – Ben

A lil’ while back, krieg hit you with a taste of  Jovi Rockwell, when he posted “Killin Dem.”  That song was decent, but not my favorite.  I mean, I was feelin it, but I didn’t have it on repeat or anything like that.  Now that doesn’t mean I’m not looking forward to Ms. Rockwell’s upcoming mixtape, Psycho Therapy, which is set to drop any day minute now.  Look for guest appearances by Diplo, Major Lazer,  Mr. Vegas,  Andy Milanokis, and none other than Akon himself.

This song, “Ben,” is a lot chiller than “Killin Dem.”  I think it’s a little more my style.  Her voice really comes through on the laidback lovers rock riddim.

She’s obviously got talent, she’s got some big names behind her, and she’s also very hot.  To boot, the eclectic Jamaica born/Jamaica-Miami bred singer has the blogs abuzz comparing her to Rihanna and MIA.  Maybe it’s just a lot of hype, but I can see her making it real big.
