Last Night's Mixtape

Cutty Ranks X Cam’ron and Vado – Limb by Tung (Cosmo Baker & Skratch Bastid’s Harlem Meets Jamaica Mix)

Posted in music by tang on July 22, 2010

Skratch Bastid and The Rub’s Cosmo Baker were rehearsing for their Let’s Build performance the other day, and somewhere along the way Cosmo decided to start fuckin with the beat to the new Dipset joint, “Speakin’ in Tongues.”  Skratch Bastid threw Cutty’s classic acapella over it and “instantly smoke filled the room and an airhorn sounded from the distance.”  The rest is mashup history.

Stream and/or download this magical musical mishmash below, but be mindful of where you are when you hit play.  You definitely don’t want to play this song too loud in the office, unless, of course, your boss is cool with ganja smoke and airhorns at the workplace.

(On a somewhat related sidenote, have you peeped the free hip hop hisotry mixtapes that they’ve been droppin’ over at The Rub?  If you haven’t, you really got get up on that.  For real.)

Jahdan Blakkamoore – Global Warning! Podcast

Posted in music by tang on June 21, 2010

Word on the streets (and by streets I really mean blogs) is that Jahdan Blakkamoore is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album, Babylon Nightmare.  No release date has been announced yet, but while we anxiously await the return of our favorite genrebending, Guyanese-Brooklynite singjay we have the Global Warning! podcast/mixtape to hold us down.

This mix was put together by Digital Ancient for Lustre Kings, the record label behind Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, and now Jahdan, as a little preview of what’s to come on the LP.  After only a couple of rotations, I’m ready to for some full-length tracks – especially the Eek-A-Mouse sampling, “Down in the Ghetto.”

Peep the tracklist and a little BTS video after the jump.  Happy Solstice, suckas!

Shabba!

Posted in music by tang on May 10, 2010

I finally got around to reading that Shabba Ranks article in the latest Fader (probably because it’s free online now), and I gotta say it was a pretty good read.  I mean, I knew Shabba was the man back in the day and that he was hella influential, but dang!  This man is a living legend.  The Fader and Eddie “Stats” Houghton have done Shabba justice.  Real Patois.

You should check out the article and stream and/or download this filthy all vinyl Shabba mix from Mr.  “Stats” himself (via Ghetto Palms).  Listen to the mix while you read article for the full Shabba! experience.

Dancehall Mixtape Re-Up

Posted in music by tang on April 8, 2010

It’s been a minute since I hit my people up with some dancehall mixtape love, so I figured it’s only right that I give you two for the price of one this time (technically it’s always free, but you get the point).

The first mix I got for y’all comes to us from mixtape master Chrissy Murderbot.  Titled Turn-of-the-Century Ragga, this mix – his 45th weekly installment from his My Year of Mixtapes blog - is a hearty helping of some of the best dancehall that the ’90s and early ’00s had to offer.  60 minutes of classic riddims, no drops and seamless blends – there’s no good reason for you not to download this immediately.  Prepare yourself for an hour chock-full of big, big tunes that sound just as bangin today as they did when they first dropped.  Be warned, if you play this at an audible level you better be prepared for a dance party.  It’s inevitable.  Peep the tracklist after the jump, and don’t forget to hit up Murderbot’s blog/mixtape treasure trove for countless hours of mixtape madness.  (A mixtape a week for a whole year! Dang, that guy is crazy…)

For your second serving of dancehall deliciousness, I have for you a brand new mix from a champion sound system that I recently got introduced to over at Discobelle, Safari Sound, out of Malmo, Sweden.  These fellas come correct with it on their latest mixtape, Bad People Deya! Move Move Move!   Defintiely a cut above the rest of that other stuff I’ve been running into out there as of late, this mix features some high quality riddims and fresh hits from Aidonia, Busy Signal, Baby Cham, Mavado, and then some, plus some seriously heavy dubplate selections.  Big ups to Safari Sound for blessing us with this one.  I can’t front though - I had no idea that they were doing their dancehall thing like this in Sweden.  After listening to this, nobody should ever doubt in Sweden’s dancehall DJ game again.  As always, the tracklist is after the jump.  Blaow!

The Heatwave – 25 Years of Dancehall

Posted in music by tang on March 18, 2010

The fellas over at The Heatwave (one of our all time favorite dancehall blogs) recently played a little homage to the last 25 years of digital dancehall on their Rinse FM radio show, starting with King Jammy and Wayne Smith’s prototype “Sleng Teng” and moving forward at a rate of about one track per year.  Whether you just wanna reminisce over the last 25 years of dancehall music, you need a little history lesson to get you up to date or you just want to listen to some big, big tunes, you should download this mix (right click, save as) immediately.

Just in case you need a little more convincing, peep the tracklist after the jump.

much love and respect once more to erin hansen/imagelala for seeing my pathetic-ass youtube playlist of her awesome set for fader’s east village radio show “the let out” and taking the time to turn that set into a mixtape for y’all to enjoy. even better, this mixtape also includes a few extra tracks that didn’t make it onto the let out show. you can download this fire mix right here, and be sure to pop on over to her site whenever you are in need of the newest, hottest dancehall jams.

the let out – dancehall set

Posted in music by krieg on January 20, 2010

a couple things that are related: 1) it’s been a minute since we’ve posted any dancehall stuff on here, and 2) did you know that the crew over at the fader have a weekly radio show? it’s called the let out, and it’s every friday on east village radio. this past friday, half the show was given over to a dancehall set mixed by erin hansen, who runs one of my favorite dancehall blogs, imagelala (bookmark that now if you are into that sort of thing). you can do two things to get this set: 1) go to the let out show page, click on listen by the january 15 show, download the playlist (which you can’t manipulate (at least in itunes) once you start playing it), and wait one hour for the dancehall set to start; or 2) go here, and let the youtube playlist that i made of the set play for you. for the record, number 2 is waaay easier. and if anyone can find this show floating around on the internet, let us know. and don’t forget to check out the LxNxM youtube channel, which hosts some huge jams that aren’t already on youtube.

Soulforce – Essential Mix Vol. 1

Posted in music by tang on December 21, 2009

I knew as soon as I heard David Rodigan’s voice that this mixtape was going to be good.  He would never vouch for any sound system that’s less than the best, right?  Exactly.  This is musical fire.

Soulforce is from Krefeld, Germany.  They are bad (as in good), and they’ve been hard at work since 2005.  This mix, which was first heard on the Köln radio station WDR / Funkaus Europa, is a collection of their favorite songs from the last four years.  If you’re like me, by the time you hear the second track you’ll be scanning the internet for full versions of all these songs.
